Five years ago I found out that an agent in our real estate company, HomeSmart, had been involved in an incredible life-changing event. The agent was looking out his living room window and watched as a carjacker threw this agent's wife from her car onto the driveway pavement and she ended up in critical condition at the hospital with a serious head trauma. She was in the hospital for more than 30 days and when I found out about this, I called Carol Perry, who is the Chief Business Development Officer at HomeSmart, to discuss how we could help this family. We were going to give money to the husband to help with his costs but all he wanted was some good meals because he had been eating fast food for the past 30 days. So, Carol took him some quality food to fuel his request. I then set up a meeting with Carol and Eric Kilstrom of VIP Mortgage, which had a 501c charity, and talked with them about creating a charity that helps our HomeSmart agents in times of need. At that point HomeSmart had about 3,000 realtors in the Valley. Since then, we have the largest real estate company in Maricopa County with more than 6,500 agents. We are now the largest real estate company in the state. Our charity is called HomeSmart We Care For Others. In the past five years we have raised more than $50,000, which has paid for a funeral at our company, meals for a week or month for our agents’ families, free real estate dues, home cleanings, flowers and more, basically helping our agents out in times of illness, injuries or other medical setbacks they’ve suffered. We recently held our fifth annual We Care fundraiser, which drew 175 agents who showed up to buy raffle tickets for more than 50 items donated by either our own agents or our many HomeSmart business partners. Some agents also just gave cash, which totaled almost $5,000. We raised a total of $9,000 and our HomeSmart founder, Matt Widdows, did what he has done every year … he matched our total, which meant we raised $18,000! I am so proud of our HomeSmart agents in how they rallied to make this an incredible event that helps their fellow agents. We have a big family at HomeSmart and it is awesome to know that our agents care about each other no matter how many agents we have in our local family.
I hold a monthly meeting at North Phoenix Baptist Church, which usually draws around 200 HomeSmart agents. The April 10 meeting was my 73rd consecutive one but it was the first in seven years in which the guest speaker received a standing ovation. Our speaker was Brian Mueller, CEO and President of Grand Canyon University (GCU). Brian and GCU have done an incredible job resurrecting an area of town that was very rough, buying many parcels in the area to expand the campus, including rehabbing a city owned golf course and helping secure a couple of the area high schools, and now the residents can be proud of what GCU has done for the West Valley. The standing ovation Brian received was in response to his powerful and motivational message - he will be a tough act to follow for our next monthly speakers.
