With Arizona’s beautiful weather, at least most of the year, hiking in the Valley of the Sun is a very popular activity. Hiking with our furry friends can make it even more enjoyable. As we celebrate National Walk Your Dog Day on February 22nd, consider some popular hiking trails in the greater Phoenix area. But before you go, be sure to go prepared, for your safety and that of your precious pooch.

On a warm day, be sure to pack extra water for you and your pup. Remember, dogs tend to overheat quicker than humans. It’s also important to know that the City of Phoenix prohibits dogs on hiking trails when temperatures exceed 100 degrees, although many veterinarians and the AZ Humane Society recommend not going out when temps reach 90 degrees or more. Furthermore, Phoenix also restricts trail hiking in the middays when there’s been an excessive heat warning issued.

Here are several pet-friendly trails that are highly recommended by avid Arizona hikers (click on the links for descriptions for each trail). Please check ahead for entry fees and restrictions.

EASY:

MODERATE:

Enjoy yourselves but be responsible. Dress for the weather (including booties for your dog), wear sunblock, carry lots of water for you and your pet, and carry a cell phone. By taking the proper measures, both you and your pet can enjoy a wonderful time on the trails.
