Longmont is named for Longs Peak, the highest mountain at 14,259’ in Rocky Mountain National Park (RMNP), which offers spectacular views from most places in the city. Founded in the late 1800’s from a group from Chicago, the farms in the area still support a local farmer’s market which runs from late spring through fall with local produce. The St. Vrain River splits the city in half, which was literally the case when it overflowed it’s banks in the 100 year flood of September 2013. The city has been swift to rebuild and recover the parks along the banks of the St. Vrain. McIntosh Lake is periodically home to several bald eagles and offers a 3.5 mile trail. The Union Reservoir on the east side is home to many venues of recreation. John Fielder, the renowned Colorado photographer, paired with the Longmont symphony in 2012 to promote the states 42 parks.

Besides parks, other recreational opportunities are available. Twin Peaks, Sunset, and Ute Creek are the three municipal golf courses. Sunset Pool offers multiple diving boards & slides for outdoor summer swimming, while Centennial and Longmont Recreation Center offer indoor options. Bike races and runs are frequent in summer months.

Skydivers pepper the sky in the west from Longmont’s local airport. The Longmont Humane Society places a phenomenal 90%+ of the animals that are part of its shelter into homes. With a thriving downtown district, local shops and quaint restaurants abound, and several craft breweries are located here. Home to the Boulder County Fairgrounds, Longmont hosts county events year-round.
