Arlington Heights

The Village is the 12th largest municipality in Illinois and a unique blend of old and new. Redevelopment efforts in the Downtown and other shopping areas have added vibrancy and interest, making Arlington Heights an attractive destination for homebuyers, shoppers, businesses and visitors.

Arlington Heights was founded in the mid 1800s by Asa Dunton, a Yankee stonecutter. Asa’s son William Dunton was the first homeowner of this farming community, which was originally called the “Town of Dunton.” The original train depot served as a catalyst for Arlington Heights’ growth. The train depot was a great convenience for nearby farmers who used the railroad to transport their goods. The depot became a central gathering place for the community and prompted development of a Downtown as more people settled in Arlington Heights.

Throughout its long history, Village Government has remained consistent in preserving Arlington Heights’ quality of life by providing municipal services that are responsive to the needs of the residents and businesses and are reliable, efficient and fiscally responsible.

Arlington Heights’ municipal services have received top accreditations and award recognitions. The Village is also home to award-winning Schools, a Public Library and a Park District as well as the highly acclaimed Northwest Community Hospital.

The location of Arlington Heights offers great access to major thoroughfares making travel convenient to nearby suburbs as well as to Chicago and O’Hare International Airport. The Downtown train station is Metra’s busiest commuter stop on the Northwest rail line. The train station is the hub of a transit-oriented, pedestrian friendly urban neighborhood where commuters working in Chicago can live a short walk from the station and near shopping, restaurants, entertainment and various parks where many events are held throughout the year.

There is much to discover in Arlington Heights, including the internationally renowned Arlington Park, one of the most exquisite thoroughbred horseracing facilities in the country. Additional attractions include Metropolis Performing Arts Centre, and Arlington Theatres with six large-screen auditoriums.

All in all, the Village of Palatine is committed to providing the best to its citizens by improving upon an already superior built environment. The Village knows it cannot rest upon its past success. More about Palatine

Annexations have expanded the Village to its current twelve square miles and a population of approximately 67,500. Substantial unincorporated and undeveloped areas have been annexed to the Village in previous years. Palatine’s neighbors are the Villages of Arlington Heights, Deer Park, Inverness, and Schaumburg and the City of Rolling Meadows.

Palatine has developed into a self-sufficient community. Not only does the downtown business district continue to flourish in its small town atmosphere, but thirty total shopping areas throughout the community meet every shopping need. A total of approximately 800,000 square feet of office space is available in Palatine. The creation of a light manufacturing zoning classification has allowed light industry to enter the Village. Almost 250 acres are zoned for manufacturing purposes. The Village of Palatine is home to the world corporate headquarters of the Square D Corporation, manufacturer of electrical products, and Weber Stephens, manufacturer of barbecue grills. A United Parcel Service facility exists on a 48-acre site in northeast Palatine.

The Village of Palatine is committed to a growth that augments the tax base and ensures a continued high level of services to its residents. Over the past few years the Village has experienced an unprecedented amount of building activity, including single-family, multi-family and commercial developments.
The attractiveness of Palatine can be attributed to the high quality of life that the Village has to offer. Palatine has a Village government that meets the needs of the community. The Council-Manager form of government functions under a Mayor and Council of six members, elected for four year terms on a district basis. The appointed Village Manager is in charge of daily administration and implementation of policy set by the Village Council. The Manager, in turn, appoints department heads and staff.

Palatine's residents are protected by highly trained Police and Fire Department. The Village’s Fire Department operates out of five stations located throughout the Village, with each station housing modern emergency vehicles and related equipment.

Lake Michigan water was brought to Palatine through the cooperative efforts of Palatine, three neighboring communities and the water supplier, the City of Evanston. The water is softer and provides a constant supply for years to come.

The future of Palatine is enhanced by the great educational opportunities available to the youth of the Village. Ten elementary and two junior high schools fully prepare the youth for secondary education. There are also three parochial elementary schools in the Village. The Village is also the home of two highly regarded high schools, Palatine High School and William Fremd High School. High standards are maintained which have produced decades of quality graduates. Education continues at William Rainey Harper Community College. This community college, located in the southwest corner of the Village, has approximately 24,000 students. Preparation for vocational and professional careers is taught throughout the educational process.

Adding to the well rounded, diversified community is the recreational opportunities. The Palatine Park District, a separate taxing body, serves the community as well as a large surrounding area. The district maintains 28 parks, including an 18-hole golf course, totaling 623 acres. Hundreds of classes in fitness, sports, arts and crafts, and general interest topics are continually offered by the Park District, as well as numerous sports organizations. The Salt Creek Rural Park District is located within the boundaries of three cities – the southeast limits of Palatine, western edge of Arlington Heights, and the north-central border of Rolling Meadows.  Th Salt Creek Park District is one of the “Best Kept Secrets” around, offering a nine-hole executive golf course, fishing, boating, youth and adult athletics, trips and a popular preschool program. A modern YMCA, 32 lane bowling alley, and indoor soccer facilities, to name a few, are also in the Village. A four-mile scenic bicycle trail travels through park and residential areas, has major thoroughfare underpasses and enters the Deer Grove Forest Preserve immediately north of the Village.

Cultural pursuits flourish in Palatine. Palatine boasts more than ninety civic, fraternal, charitable, social and performing organizations. Cutting Hall, run by the Palatine Park District is Palatine's center for the performing arts. George Clayson House, listed on the National Register of Historic Places, houses the Palatine Historical Society and Museum.

The Palatine Public Library contains over 175,000 volumes and offers children's programs, book discussion groups and workshops for the community. Hennen’s American Public Library Rating Index has names the Palatine Public Library among the top five libraries in the nation serving population between 50,000 and 100,000 people. Twenty-four churches of various denominations complement the Village. Palatine’s Street Fest, July 4th celebrations,  promote the local community spirit.
